How often should you Clean Mattress

Surprisingly each mattress absorbs up to 26 gallons of our sweat per year. Besides, how clean the mattress is impacts the air quality in the bedroom that you take in. Since you are exposed to dirt, grime and critters at least 8 hours a night this particles can cause health problems such as respiratory problems, allergies, insomnia, and even depressed immune system. Hence, to stay healthy and refresh during sleep it is imperative to clean your mattress frequently. Moreover, the mattresses are expensive. You can protect your mattress and extend its expected life by cleaning and rotating. If you don’t take care of mattress the average life is 5-7 years. However, cleaning and flipping a mattress may boost its life up to 12 years.  How often clean a Mattress?  You should clean a mattress approximately every 6-12 months. This really depends on your cleaning schedule and sensitivity to allergy. If you are highly allergic you should clean and disinfect the bed more frequently. You can also bring more comfort to your family by cleaning the mattresses more often. In order to prevent sagging it is recommended to flip the mattresses at least every 6 months. Why not clean mattresses right after rotating?  How to clean a mattress? 

1. Take off and wash linens: Remove linens, mattress cover or any decorative pillow and put into washing machine. If the colors will not bleed make the water as hot as possible. In this way, all germs and bacteria will be killed. Please note that a mattress cover protect the mattress by minimizing the chance of stains and germs reaching to the mattress. So if you don’t have a mattress cover now is the best to buy one and put it on the mattress after cleaning.  2. Vacuum the mattress : Vacuum the surface of the mattress using an upholstery attachment. Vacuuming will suck up most of crumbs, dust, dirt, and hair hidden in the crevices. Even though you use a mattress cover you should not skip. Once you removed larger particles you are ready to proceed to the next steps. 

3. Treat the stains: Most mattresses have some sort of stains. Blood, urine, sweep or even coffee spills can seep into the mattress and take home for a while. You can exploit the cleaning power of lemon and moisture-removing property of salt to treat the spots on a mattress. For that, create a paste by mixing lemon and salt and rub the spot gently with it. Wait 30-60 minutes and wipe with a clean tower. The stain should be faded. Since lemon juice can bleach the color, don’t use lemon and salt mixture for darker mattresses.  For lifting old and deep stain you have another at your disposal.

Combine natural liquid dish soap, baking soda, a few drops of hydrogen peroxide, and water and spray it on the spot. Afterward, blot the stain with a clean rug and vacuum the surface. You will be surprised at how effective it is. Since baking soda may damage the vacuum cleaner don’t forget to empty the dust bag as soon as possible.
